The Hotel Industry Continues to Consolidate
I remember years ago I stayed at IBIS hotels in Morocco. They reminded me of Motel 6 in the U.S. Well, not surprise that, up until 2012, French hotel giant Accor Hotels owned them both. When I recently researched the hotel industry for a client, I learned the hotel industry continues to consolidate. In 2016, Marriott International acquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, creating the largest hotel chain in the world. AccorHotels acquired the Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel brands. In 2015, InterContinental Hotels acquired Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants. Despite the consolidation, the industry is still fragmented. However, industry insiders expect the global giants will continue to gain market share. Financial services firm JLL published a 2017 report on the topic here.
